NOT ALL ELDERLY PEOPLE CAN ASSESS THEMSELVES!
Self-assessment is not always enough, so you need to know how to use hetero-assessment of pain.
This allows the assessment of chronic pain in elderly people with verbal communication difficulties. Created in 1992 and approved in 1999, DOLOPLUS was the first tool to win international recognition.
Approved in 2007, the ALGOPLUS scale was created to fill in a gap: how to assess acute pain in elderly people with verbal communication difficulties within less than a minute.
Neuropathic pain
Clinical screening for neuropathic pain has no specific scales for the elderly subject. We have therefore devised a geriatric approach based upon the SFETD (French Society for the Study and Treatment of Pain) 2010 recommendations.
